DIY Fabulous Face Scrub Recipe for Incredibly Smooth Skin!

So, a few years back, I was your average girl. I washed my face at least once a day (like everyone told me to) and I struggled with my share of acne and even used ProActive when I couldn’t stand it any more. I had a whole bunch of special products from face wash to moisturizer etc. I even visited Acne.org and started purchasing the same ingredients for way less money on Amazon instead of dealing with the ProActive subscription headache. I still have those bottles and, on the rare instance when I do break out, use them maybe once or twice a year. So, what changed? Why do I no longer need my hard core acne cream, lotions and such?

Well, I don’t break out any more and that may be due to just the simple fact that I’m getting older (and have a WAY better diet) but I suspect it has something to do with the fact that I almost NEVER wear makeup anymore and, guess what? The only time I EVER wash my face now is to take said makeup off. After that my nightly routine is to brush my teeth, brush my hair and then go to bed, I simply don’t touch my face at all. I wash my hair about once a week and shower about twice a week but I absolutely do nothing specific to my face – no washing, no special moisturizers, no special soaps, none of the above. And about the only time I break out now is maybe once or twice a year! My skin has always been a bit on the greasy side and that certainly hasn’t changed at all however, the older I get, the more I wonder if I really SHOULD be doing something for my skin to help keep it not only healthy but also young looking.

So, I did exactly what you would expect me to do in this situation: I searched the internet. Like with all of my recipes I would not be telling you about it here unless I had been trying it for at least a month and had only good things to report. This is SO simple! And you can really use any essential oils you want I’m just a lavender fanatic and, because I wash my face before I go to bed, the lavender helps me sleep.

1 part coconut oil

1 part baking soda

ten drops essential oil

Put it directly on your dry unwashed face and start scrubbing.

I say “1 part” of each but really the mixing situation here is going to all depend on what temperature your coconut oil is at. It was really warm in my house when I mixed this recipe up so I didn’t have to warm my coconut oil to make it workable at all and that meant I used a little more baking soda then coconut oil. You may need to warm up your coconut oil a tad so you can actually mix it. (Coconut oil will melt at 76 degrees.) When this solution is below 76 degrees it will harden however, it will also melt on contact with your skin so just melt it between your fingers before applying it to your face.

There are several things that excite me about this recipe and the first one is: YOU DON’T NEED MUCH. Seriously, about a nickel sized dollop on the tips of your fingers is PLENTY. A little here goes a very long way, in fact, you’ll be using so little that you won’t see it on your face at all (except that it’s shiny). The baking soda feels like a really fine sand and definitely gives you the impression that you are truly scrubbing and cleaning your face really well. To wash off I use the hottest water my sink will run, soak a wash cloth and just wipe it off, then dry my face with a dry towel. (NOTE HERE: Make sure and run your hot water for a good thirty seconds after you’re done: Coconut oil will harden and give your drains a very bad day. You could always use a disposable towel instead and then throw it away but with the small amount I’m using I’m not worrying about it.)

I’m using this to wash my face off about three times a week. This is a great wash and takes makeup off pretty good too but I need to stress here that I would definitely still call this a “scrub” so, if you have sensitive skin, make sure and go easy when you start using it. I had one little open sore (old zit that was taking its sweet time healing) and I could definitely feel the burn when I used this recipe!

The results: My face is so smooth and soft! The first time I used it I went to bed to read before going to sleep and I could barely leave my face alone, I just couldn’t believe how nice it felt. (I’m going ahead and using this down my throat too because, why not?) This hasn’t caused me any kind of dryness or caused me to break out at all – it is literally a moisturizer and wash all in one! The results on my old acne scars has been really amazing as well, they literally “shed” and even got kind of sore again and now many of them have all but disappeared including the big scar above my eye that I got during the house renovation – this alone has me wanting to shout this recipe to the roof tops! The skin on my face looks better now then it literally has in YEARS.

Whoop, whoop, I've got to give this a try. Just like you I hardly ever wear makeup but I love a good natural scrub to get rid of old flaky skin. I wonder if you could add some witch hazel to the mix? Thanks for the recipe

I really want to buy essential oils. So many things call for them. I don't know which brand or type to buy or where to buy? Help please :)
