  • Do you have a lot of trees? My best guess without knowing where you live or seeing a photo, is that your yard needs to be dug up and leveled. Or add french drains. Chances are there is not enough sunlight and air flow to dry things up, hence the mold. If you could post a photo, it would be easier for us to give you better solutions.

Depending on the drainage you may have a low area where water can stand. Clear out any underbrush that would restrict the sun from getting to the earth and see if the area needs a drain or needs to be raised.

That was my first thought, too, Janice. I tend to think it's probably moss and not mold. Personally, I think moss can be quite attractive in the right areas. I would leave it alone and decorate around it, but others may not prefer it. Agree a pic would be a big help.

I also have dark spots in our back yard where it only gets brief morning sun. I first thought that it was "mold"..... but as the others have suggested, i came to see that it was "moss" and just left it alone.... it actually has spread quite a bit back there and filled in the areas where grass doesn't grow well :-)

neither mold, nor moss is a favorite for me.

could even be algae, which might be a mold. I'm not even sure, again lack of sunlight and an area never dries. i had it on one of my decks, scrubbed and used a pwer washer to get rid of it, within a year, it was starting to turn green again. had to cut down some trees. and the bonus was the fresh air.
