How do I make a waterfall from my garage roof?

My yard next to the garage always floods during the rainy season and freezes during the winter. Instead of just putting up a gutter, I was hoping to make something more fun. If I dig a trench and fill it with rocks, I could somehow make a waterfall from the garage roof. I need some cheap and easy ideas. Yes, I know I need to paint the trim again.
Take a look at the Dog River Library in Douglasville, GA 30135. They have copper colored chains taking water from the roof edge to the ground, where there is an underground cistern to collect the water and use it for watering the plants. It is beautiful when it rains and when it is dry.
Build up the ground slanting it forward with small rock as a bottom for draining, followed by dirt then pack it down. Go junkin find some old windows and make green houses by hinging the windows to frames built to fit, grow small vegetables and enjoy. OR......purchase several lillac trees, they are rapid grawers and will cover the unsitely side of your garage. OR .....KEEP YOUR EYES OUT FOR CONSTRUCTION ROOFERS in your area ....people often times replace gutters when they reroof.........walaaaa free guter for your garage!!!!!! DIY??!!!
Please don't go with the waterfall idea, it will erode your foundation without proper drainage. Put up that gutter and add the decorative drain chain. I love the idea to recycle the water, but if you use a water barrel be sure to raise it up so you don't have to pump it out.

Are you thinking of rain chains (http://craftingagreenworld.com/2015/04/06/rain-chains-for-your-yard/)? I'm not sure how they would winter in Minnesota but they appear to do well in more temperate climates. We don't have gutters on our house (no rain chains, either). The eaves come out a bit and we haven't had a problem with water in the basement or damaging the foundation in the 13 years we've been here. Good luck!
