Even though mine are in great shape, and a one piece drop in unit, (in both bathrooms), i just use a decent quality fabric curtain. Use pretty accessories and hang nice towels no one will notice or care.
A good quality, nice looking fabric shower curtain with a thick liner like the ones used in hotels and maybe a curved shower rod will help.
You could always build a wood front on the front side of the tub. Maybe use some kind of decorative moulding and/or appliques to spice it up.
