How long should I set my sprinker for to water my lawn?

    I agree with Darby on the timing. Water early in the morning (between 5 and 8) while it is still cool and before the sun evaporates all your water and burns the grass.

    However, I disagree on the frequency. The water needs of various grass types varies, but one inch per week is a good rule of thumb. Plant a tuna can in the lawn and test if you are getting an inch of water onto the turf. I think (and your Virginia Cooperative Extension folks agree with me) ...»

    that you can get away with watering twice a week to effectively reach this level.
