Can this tree be topped and, if so, how will it effect its growth , it's about 25 feet tall now.

It looks like a southern yellow pine. I am not sure about topping, hopefully someone else will chime in.

Looks like a pine tine. Do you live in the South?

My advice would be to call your local agricultural extension service, or find an arborist locally. Either should be able to give you good advice on how to take care of your tree. Good Luck !

It appears to be white pine. I have the weeping ones. You don't top these pines you trim off the new growth a little at a time.

Why do you want to top it? Looks like a beautiful tree. I would love for my Italian stone pine to shoot up to 25 ft. At a foot of growth a year, I will not live to see it fully grown.

I suppose any tree can be topped and made into something else. I used to have a huge Japanese black pine and I have seen them so stunted as to look like miniature Christmas trees. Take a picture of yours and then cut it off where you want to top it and see if you like it then.

It is really never a good idea to top trees. It destroys the natural growth pattern. Of course there are always exceptions to every rule. Are there broken branches or diseased areas that may be weak and break during a storm? Is the tree too tall for your liking? If it WERE to topple during a storm, would it damage property? I like Marilyns idea of taking a photo of the full tree, and topping the photo.
