Prune out damaged branches in fall. cut off old blooms just behind the head after flowers fade in fall. Some people cut them to the ground in the fall to encourage more blooms. Others just trim out damaged wood to have sturdier blooms.

Here is a great video that walks you through the different varieties of Hydrangea and when to prune so you still get flowers. I follow her (Garden Answer) on Youtube and Facebook. She's wonderful.

Hydrangeas fall into three different categories or types. How you prune them depends on what type you have. Check out this website to identify your hydrangea, what type it is and when and how to prune it http://www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com/pruning.html
