I've never rooted a cutting, but I have propagated my clematis by laying a piece of growing vine on the ground. I cover it with a handful of dirt and place a rock on the dirt to keep everything in place. (really low tech ). Then I just leave it alone. The vine will root where it touches the ground. That is when I cut it from the original plant. Spring is a good time but be extra careful with the tender new vines. It works better for me in the fall. I Laydown the vine, do the dirt/rock thing in 4-5 places where there is a node, toss on some fallen leaves and leave it alone until Spring. You will see new plants spring up each place your clematis has rooted .

This is so useful to know. I did know that Azaleas can be propagated this way. I have a very beautiful and unusual Clematis that I'll try this with.

iWhen my mom moved i dug up hers and put it in a bucket of water mixed with Mirical (spelled wrong) grow. I thought it died but planted it anyway. That was about 14 years ago and it is still is growing every year. Looks great in my yard!
