I had a used brick fireplace that I was tired of. I used latex paint that I added water to thin out and have a white washed finish that we love! Definitely a white look but not solid as just plain paint would be.

Thank you for the information . Maybe that is exactly what I need to do. Do you have any pictures of the finished project? I would love to see it.

I was on the fence about painting mine also. I had the headboard of an old bed in the garage. Painted it a complimenting color to my room which was green. Distressed and dark waxed. Hung the headboard over the mantle and it covered most of the brick above the mantle. Then hung mirror in front of headboard. I had the color I wanted without painting the brick.

Used to have a brick fireplace in our last home. We painted the brick...using masonry paint...it was the typical red or a very faded similar color. The color basics in our family room was hunter green. We painted the brick a green. It looked awesome! Good luck!

You could try to use some kind of wax, clay, powder etc or somesuch and rub it onto the brick. That would leave it red + the color that you used and be easy to change should you desire to. (Ya said ya was a bit nervous about painting so was trying to come up with somehting that didnt require paint) Alternatively, if you check out HGTV, there are quite a few fireplace redos there that change the look w/o paint or restructuring.
  • Owens Corning fiberglass company makes faux stones that can go over the bricks. With some metal mesh lathe and mortar over the bricks then apply the stones for a dramatic change

I agree if you don't want to paint the brick you could install faux stone over so many new inexpensive products out there that not only look but feel real, and so many style stone and color variations to choose from.... and if you dont want to actually adhere it to the brick, you could build surround out of wood then you could put this over the brick, either stain, paint or attach stone to it. This way could be removed and no damage to brick if you are ever considering resale.

I had my Mexican brick fireplace painted, which is very porous 15 years ago and have not regretted it. That was 15 years ago. I've attached a pic, but please pardon the mess on the hearth. The color is a dark khakis which goes perfectly with the dark blue green walls and the picture that usually hangs over the FP. No, never a regret.

I was in your same spot a few months ago. We restoned our red brick with Airstone you can only buy it at lowes. And you glue it on so easy to apply. It takes more glue than they say because the brick is uneven you fill in with the glue. And you cut it with a hacksaw. We had to do alot of cuts so we got a blade for our saw. And it is amazing how great it looks it too years off our house. If you want me to send you pic email me Jodyshandmadesoap@gmail.com And its still stone we have a wood burning stove its fine.
