    Is it plastic or fabric????

Fabric on plastic for one shade, and faric on a thick-ish paper for another. Well...I took a chance and washed faded shades prior to painting. And....because I liked the look of the wet shade, which was black originally, I decided to try using thinned black acrylic paint while the shades were still slightly damp. They are now resting back on lamps, with lights turned on. I can still see light thru the shade which is fine by me. Probably another coat of paint would be good, but it is already a big improvement.

    I can live with it.

I went for acrylic paint vs. fabric paint. I wasn't sure how to heat set the dye....especially with plastic involved.

Live with what you like! Great idea...I wouldn't worry about heat setting the colors the heat of the bulb should help. If you are happy leave it to much paint could crack with the heat of the bulb over time. but Hey! go for it.

I have gentle hand washed and bleached fabric shades and fabric over plastic lamp shades.
