Add a mirror to the end of the hallway, add a runner to give the flooring dimension, artwork and pictures are great additions to hallway walls. Also, a lighter color paint will open it up and not make it so dark. You could change your lighting too. I have a little table in my hallway with a small lamp to light up the area.

Maybe an art gallery hallway?
Add white wainscoting to the bottom portion of the wall and paint the top portion. Add a gallery of artwork to the top portion.
