Celebrate in Style - Hand Made Heart Serving Platter

1 Material
I've just realized that Mother's Day is around the corner. How does that happen, UGH. If you're like me and time's running short to make something extra special for your Mom, then this slate heart serving platter might be just what you're looking for.
They're super easy to make. Sometimes, the best DIY projects are the simplest, right? It only took us about an hour and hardly cost a thing. All you need is a piece of slate - you can find slate tiles at most builder's yards. You'll also need a tile cutter, we used our Dremel, water , pliers, a rubber mallet and safety gear.
To make the heart shape simply score a heart onto the slate using a sharp knife or pointy stick. You could also use a permanent marker to draw the heart. When you’re ready to start cutting, spray the slate with water, turn on the Dremel and start cutting. Oh yeah, and don’t forget to put on a dust mask and all your protective gear.  If you inhale that fine dust that you see in the picture below it will make you feel like you smoke three packets a day, so please be careful icon
You don’t need to cut too deeply into the slate. About 5 mm (1/8”) should be more than enough. Once you’ve cut all the way around the heart, use your pliers or the rubber mallet to break off the outer edges.
It's that easy. Seriously, you can see a video of how we did it here. The serving platter can be sealed with food safe sealer to you don't need to worry about stains.
And the sealer brings out all those beautiful colors of natural slate and enhances those layers.
I'd love to know what you think and if you've got any questions please let me know.
