How can I paint my old painted crown molding to look like oak wood?

molding probably has been painted 20 times over, but removing it would be a COSTLY nightmare! I know there are techniques, but can't seem to find them. Please Help !! Thanks, Mama "T"

What I did was to paint the surface with a tone close to the base of the wood I was looking to imitate. For you, perhaps a medium golden tan (variations on baby poop). Then you take a nice stain and a nice stain brush. I used a "dry bursh" technique and stoked on the stain very lightly. This gave the appearance of wood grain. Practice on some scrap wood until you get an effect you like. I used it on doors and it was very effective. Afterwards I followed it up with a coat of varithane, to protect the paint. You may not need to do that if it is crown molding...it isn't gonna get a lot of damage.
