I don't know how steep a slope it is, but if not too steep, I like a walkway framed by two by fours. Set pavers in a path to the door and then fill the area around the pavers with smooth stones. Around the walkway plants groundcovers, low growing plants that fillin the area and give it a nice polish. Here is a site with groundcovers that can take a lot of foot traffic : http://www.finegardening.com/plants-pathways  ; Good luck!

Depending upon the degree of slope & amount of rainfall; my suggestion would be to work with those factors & tier the ground but don't forget to add any necessary drainage system to the overall mix...it may save you money in the long run! Water loving plants should be used near any drain system where the water will tend to pool...they will use the majority of the water for their survival. Don't be afraid to dig & create separate oasis' of plants as you go down the sloped areas...you could run a drain along the edge of a tiered area & have the drain end in an oasis of water loving plants. You could put in mini decks that intersect one another...where you could have a cup of coffee at a mini table & enjoy that beautiful planting of Hostas & trailing lobelia & ferns...let your imagination go!

Thank you so much. Never thought about water loving plants. This area is on the north side of the house so not much sun.
