Start by taking off the door and using something like a sheet to cover the entrance. Paint or wallpaper the inside of the closet to brighten it up, and insert some shelving for storage. Take the door off first. Spackle and paint the walls so they are smooth. You can put a pre - made desk in, depending on the size of the closet and the opening. I think floating shelves would be great, and an area for organizing on the walls, to save space on the desk.
