    Pine bark mulch is excellent. As it breaks down it is the perfect fertilizer. It helps retain moisture and keeps the roots from overheating, if you're in a hot climate. It is also good weed abatement.

    Newly planted perennials should not be fed until after one year of established growth. Are you asking for ideas on a ground cover? What is your lighting?

    i have great luck with shredded hardwood mulch. With all mulch you have to be careful not to get it too close to perennial plant stalks. Happy gardening.
