Be Still My Heart! (book Page and Wood Heart Decor)

Sad day here, as a good friend of mine lost her mother to a well and long fought illness (cancer). : ( Another friend had purchased her mother's favorite horse about a month ago and asked if I would make a heart from the horses hair so that she could place it in her hand to take with her on her new journey. Of course I can , and of course I did.

This got me thinking about hearts and the post I had seen of a heart made from rolled book pages, and the fact that I had left over pages from my recent projects, and a wall that I thought 'needed something' (I always think a completely bare wall 'needs something' , I think it's a curse...). I also had this cool piece of wood....

Well heck , I just had to make something , I needed the distraction that creating brings: ) Here is what I came up with.

For the curious (because I know I would be), this is the horse hair heart that I made for my friend.  It is braided horse tail hair and this particular one is braided around wire so that the shape can be created and maintained.
On to the project.  You will need:
1. Book pages approximately 25. Mine were 4 x 6"
2. Pencil or pen to wrap and roll the pages
3. Something to put them on , in my case a wood piece
4. Hot glue gun and lots of glue
The wood piece I had was raw wood, so I got out my handy dandy dark and clear wax and waxed it.  Then I cut out a heart template so I knew how big I wanted the finished heart.  This was just out of some scrap paper.
Then I began rolling the pages.  You can roll all the pages that you think you might need , or roll as you go.  I am not patient enough to roll all of them before beginning a project.. far too boring to not be seeing any progress!  (in other words, I am impatient....icon )
Here I am planning out the beginning.  These are the full size of the roll. You can see that I started where I could use the full roll and went down from there.  When I was ready, I traced around the heart template and began gluing them down.
Here I am done with the bottom half and beginning the top parts.  I did go back , as you will see, and add another piece between the small end and the second roll up to better balance the peak.
Here you can see I marked the center. The rolls were not long enough to go the full length at this point, and I was getting to the 'v' part of the heart.
Take care to keep an eye and be mindful of 'blank spots' where no writing is on the pages.  These can be interesting blanks , or not so interesting if you put too many together : )
And here it is almost complete.  You can see on the bottom of the heart where I added another piece to help the point transition.  I used a stencil to carefully add "Amour" (love) to the heart.
I had also previously tried my hand at a book page rose.. (yes, I only made one... they are a pain in the ..    well, for me, and I decided that it was not something I wished to invest my time in icon ) I decided that it might look good with this and I think I was right! I created a bow from some ribbon I had on hand; glued that to the wood, then glued the rose in place.

I love bows, and flowers and hearts .. I am definitely a 'girly , girl'.
I screwed in two eye hooks and ran a simple cream roping to create a hanger.

There she is .  All done!
Of course it had to go with my book wreath.  : )

Pretty cool.. Nice little distracting project.
