How can I keep rattlers ,yes rattle snakes, out of my garden?

I live in southern New Mexico and we have snakes. I've seen a couple in my garden now I'm petrified to go down there. Please can someone HELP!

I have heard they won't cross horse hair placed around the perimeter. Heard of making rope from the hair works. But haven't tried it myself.
