Moth balls, they work for any animal plus snakes

I've successfully deterred deer by making a "fence" using fishing line. Drive in a few 4-5' stakes and string fishing line between them. Since deer usually come at night, when they walk into the line, they feel it and walk away from it.

Both of these are good ideas and I'd like to add a third. Collect your or your dogs hair if you have one and spread it in the area where the deer are feeding or on their trail. With such a high sense of smell they will discontinue being in that area. You may have to spread more every so often especially after a rain. This also keeps the rabbits and deer out of my strawberry patch.
