Shady area or very filtered sunlight. Mine are actually planted in what we call our "North" garden bed. The original plant has died off but it sent out underground roots nearly 3' away and I now have 2 lush plant growing. Mine are also white flowers. I've not had much luck with the pink ones. The original bush was planted nearly 20 years ago.

Sounds like a stunted growth. I had hydrangeas that were going through the same problem. I dug up the plant and founds the roots were a healthy looking white except they were fuzzy looking. Which means root aphids. I soaked the hydrangea root balls in a diluted need oil solution over night. I also treated the area they were planted with ant pellets(ants farm them) and more neem oil. I will continue to treat the soil and check the root ball every so often. Root aphids are starting to spread everywhere. Even in nurseries. Hopefully this is not your problem.

Bleeding hearts come in various growth projections. I have both the tall bleeding hearts as well as the lower bushier type.
