What's your favorite grass substitute?

Just finished our little getaway on a beautiful bluff in the Cumberland mts/ TN. I want this spot to be as carefree as possible, so I'm ponder what to plant between us and the edge, to stabilize the soil but don't want to mow every time I'm there. Or spray chemicals. There is a creek below us, so I don't want to have toxic runoff. It also will get some foot traffic, as there will be a fire pit/sitting area. Thanks for suggestion!

Sedum, creeping thyme are both good and will live in your climate well. If you don't mind mint taking over it will look pretty and smell good when stepped on, but a horrible job to yank out and replace.

All plants can be invasive. Some by seeds and more by roots. As we all know, Some spread slowly and most double in area each season. The best idea I have, is to find a spreading plant/ weed that has shallow roots like bugle weed, creeping Charlie, Veronica ( vinca) . That way it's much easier to remove . Happy gardening
