Maple tree roots - UGH!

Julie
by Julie
The roots of this magnificent tree (a sapling my son brought home from preschool 25 years ago) are consistently exposing themselves more and more year after year in the yard affecting mowing and the esthetics. Any ideas on how to disguise them would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all!

depending on where the tree is planted you consider container plantings tot hide the roots.

You could bring in a load of compost and soil to cover the roots, then plant with a ground cover or mosses. Grass won't grow, it's too shady and the tree takes all of the ground water.

Design a border around the tree with edging of either plastic or metal and fill in with mulch. You then can fill in with shade growing perreniels

I agree with Brenda, shade loving perennials is the way to go to hide a multitude of sins. Decide how far you want to go out and create an edge of your choice of blocks or ties, or whatever you want. Fill with soil, but no higher around the tree than the soil level it has now or you could harm the maple tree. Plant to your hearts content with shade loving perennials and perhaps a few annuals for contrast. Have fun with it!

I had to make a wide border around my maple trees. Silver maples that I love/hate. I love the shade and hate the seeds those trees put out. I have also found that the roots like to move up into the compost. I had a six inch height of border. I recently restocked my border (stacked rocks) and the more shallow roots are in a perfect circle. I had flowers planted in last season, this season I'm leaving it empty.

I think a lot of use never grew up and still like to play in the dirt. Maybe that is why we enjoy gardening so much!
