My two fig trees stopped producing figs three years ago!

I pruned them three years ago because of interference with electrical wiring. Since then it produced fruit once but the fruit never ripened. New branches come out of the bottom but the old branches are dying. I estimate the trees to be about 35 years old. Any hope? They are in south east side of my house.

Usually a fig tree fruit will not ripen when the tree is under stress. This could be an effect of lack of water or nutrients.

  • It was over pruned. Since there is still life in the root system, let the bottom shoots develop, (provided you still want a fig tree), and see which one becomes dominant, then carefully prune the lesser shoots so the main new shoot grows strong. Leave the old tree to wither naturally. Once the new shoot is strong enough, without a photo, I am thinking next spring, you can cut the old tree down to ground level. I had 3 just turn up in my side yard last fall. One I left in place, another I moved to another part of my yard and the third I gave away, as I already have a fully grown fig in my yard.
