Deep rich water-retaining soil. They are bog plants so they appreciate soil that contains a lot of humus and compost down in the root zone. To get large bulbs, they have to absorb a lot of surplus nutrients, more and in excess of what the plant uses to grow leaves. The richer the soil, the bigger it will grow. And, it need lots of sun light...doesn't like to grow in the shade. Give it room, food, water and sun light in abundance...and lots of root space. Save your bulbs by digging them before the last killing frost. Cut he leaves off about a foot above the top of the bulbs, then blast the dirt off the bulbs with the water hose. Lay the bulbs some place where they can dry out and the bases of the old leaves will wither and die back to the top of the bulbs. Store the bulbs in a dry dark place over winter until it is time to replant them in the late spring. The soil should be warm. They don't like to be planted in wet cold soil because they won't even try to grow if the temperature isn't warm enough. Plant the bulbs with at least a foot of rich fertilized enriched soil over the top part of the bulb. Water good and then just wait until they first shoot emerges from the ground before you begin to water them again. Top dress the soil in mid summer with a couple of inches of compost or well rotted manure, or water with balanced water soluble all purpose plant food, like a 10-5-10.
