They can be cleaned with a hard (dry) brush, bleached and quickly dried. There are also many mold cleaners available at your local hardware store--including some green options. (Be sure to wear a mask and ventillate the area if you're going to attempt a DIY. Hiring a mold removal specialist is also an option.)

To keep the mold from returning, you'll need to find out where the moisture and dampness is coming from. Have a dehumidifier on hand and be sure to properly vent the area and increase air flow if possible.

First recommendation is immediately put on a dehumidifier.Second recommendation which will be temporary is placing packages of Damp rid all through the basement. This will at least rid the nasty odor. Then I would consider a safe mold remover. Check with your local Home Improvent store in the paint department as I cannot remember the name.

You will want to paint all of the walls with a product like Kilz, which will prevent further mold from developing once you remove it all.

Yep that was my plans. I wanted to get the moisture out & get the mold killed , then paint. Thanks for your info.

Why does it have mold? You need to figure that out first or it will come back.
