Water

Shari on Jan 12, 2014It depends on the depth of your well and the quality of the water you are getting out of it. Water softeners and purification systems do different things. If your water isn't clear or has an odd smell or taste, you may benefit from a purification system. A purification system should make your water taste better, like drinking pure spring water or bottled water. Water softeners remove heavy concentrations of minerals that make water "hard." Mineral deposits are what leaves behind a film on your clothes, on dishes, your skin, shower tile, toilet etc. A water softener should not really change the taste of your water significantly but it will definitely change how it feels and reacts with soaps. (You need less laundry soap, less bath soap and shampoo to work up a lather etc., and your hair and skin will feel softer because you don't have hard water mineral deposits clinging to you. Until you get use to soft water, the water might feel "slimy" and you might even feel like you can't completely rinse the soap off your skin or shampoo out. Our well is pretty deep--255 feet--but the water was stinky and hard so that why we ended up with both a purification/chlorination system and a softening system. Before we got the systems installed, I did have some minor problems with some "sludge" clogging up the filter on my HE washer, but I don't know if it was the water purification system, the softener, or a combination of both that solved the problem for me. You can have your water tested but it would probably be better to have it done by an independent testing company, if you can. Any company who is selling water treatment systems can test it but most likely they will be a bit biased about the quality of your water because obviously they want to sell you a system.Helpful Reply

The Garden Frog with C Renee on Jan 12, 2014You should not drink water from the softener. You have to add a filtration system at the sink and/or ice maker. The water will be salty and taste funny. Well water can be very hard on appliances and it may be worth having your water tested and investigating what options would work for you.Helpful Reply

Donald Withers on Jan 13, 2014I have a 140 ft. well, and it has great water but does pump some lime and rust. We installed a Kinetico softener several years ago, and our water is crystal clear and tastes great! The Kinetico system uses twin tanks, a filter in-line, and does not run on electricity! It regenerates after so many gallons of water. The tech that installed our system tested our water, and set the regeneration from those tests. While one tank is regenerating, it switches to the other tank, so you always have a fresh tank ready. We love it, and it uses so little salt, I forget to check it.Helpful Reply

Kayteelou on Jan 13, 2014Have your water tested for hardness....iron, lime and or sulfa [smells]. Our water was drinkable but eventually hard water deposits will build up in the pipes that can very expensive to replace. You can add a mall filter under the sink strictly for drinking.Helpful Reply

Shari on Jan 13, 2014Regarding not drinking softened water...just wanted to add that with our system, the purification process happens first and then the purified water goes through the softener. We drink water from the tap (and cook with it) all the time and taste absolutely no saltiness from the softened water. I can not taste a bit of difference in it and bottled water. I do have a reverse osmosis water tap on the sink but really only use it for filling my Keurig coffee maker and iron.Helpful Reply
