Its all about the variety of hydrangea- to get tall-growing hydrangeas, plant ones whose nature it is to get that tall. Pee-Gee granifloras can get 6 feet or more, as can Lightlights. They are paniculatas, not mopheads, but they are stronger and taller, and have similar flowers, if not exactly like mopheads.

How tall are they? Some are only meant to get 2-3' tall.

Check what type of hydrangea you have. You might have a dwarf or short variety.

Also check to see if they bloom on old wood or new wood. My hydrangas bloom on old growth and every winter they freeze.....no flowers. I have another white one that blooms on new branches, so they are beautiful in the spring. These are about 2 to 3 foot tall. The ones that bloom on old branches are about 6 foot tall.

I have a different problem that someone may have an answer to. I have an old hydrangea (maybe 20-25 years) that used to grow up to about 6' tall each summer and was covered with gorgeous flowers. Now it only grows about 2 1/2'-3' tall. Still has beautiful flowers (I make them blue) but I miss having the big plant it used to be. Could it be a result of bad trimming? When I did the trimming, it grew well. When a former gardener trimmed it, it never grew tall again. Any way to encourage it to get big again? Thanks...
