Plastering Walls

Over the years some of the plaster in our house has cracked and some cases the finish has fallen off exposing the unfinished wall. I'd like to do it myself or at least find someone in my area that could help out with this project. What are your recommendations?

i have plaster walls and I've used regular drywall mud and a trowel to fill in small holes and fix place where it had chipped off. It works well and can be easily painted when you're done.
