You could grow any tomato in a pot as long as the pot is big enough for the mature plant and that you have enough support for the plant.
Italian heirloom, mortgage lifter, brandywine, better boy, black plumb, Hungarian heart, german pink, wisconsin55, Amish paste, better boy. i've planted all these in a 5 gallon container. i mix my own potting mix, adding continuous release fertilizer and a boost of more imediate release as the bloosems set.
tomatoes need a min. of 5 gallons of a good growing medium, and water regularly at least a gal. per week, and maybe more in the 98 degree days. if you are growing in a container you still need to stake up the vines.

Your county extension agent or your local nurseryman could tell which tomato produces best in your area. They would know the soils and conditions to grow tomatoes.
Absolutely the best is patio tomato !I put mine in the ground for more prolific results but hard to beat for no staking-just a a tomato/pepper basket.
