How often do peonies need to be lifted, separated and replanted?

    If the peonies stop producing flowers that is the indication they need to be split and transplanted.Fall is the best time to do that.

    Thanks so much for the reply. They are still producing like crazy but they've been in the same spot for at least 15 years. I guess I'll leave them for a while longer.

    If they are doing well, they never have to be touched. Cut them back in the Fall, and give them some kind of support to keep them from toppling over.

    Agree with other folks who posted: cut them back in the Fall, support them in the Spring, otherwise, leave them alone. I have always read that they don't like to be uprooted, divided, relocated, etc. I have one peony which is 17+ years old. The plant is happy!!
