Ways to finish a stained wood piece?

I sanded and re-stained an OLD magazine end table. I want it to have an old, rustic feel, so I've done some distressing. Now I am wondering about sealing it. In the past I've just poly'ed my wood pieces, but I'm wondering if there is an alternative. Can I use a wax finish or is poly the best way to go on stained wood? I am SO very new at all of this. Very much appreciate your help!!

I used to do a lot of refinishing and I always like the natural look of Watco Danish Oil. It comes in colors or natural. Great stuff.
