How can you refinish a laminate covered bathroom vanity?

Some of the laminate on my bathroom vanity is coming loose. I would like to refinish it possibly with a wood stain but am not sure how to go about it or even if stain would be the way to go.

If you take all the laminate off the vanity, then sand it well, that should leave you with wood that can be stained. If you are looking to paint, fill any chips with plastic wood, sand smooth and prime/paint as desired.

There could be quite a bit of sanding prep work to do. You could lay something over the top of it. I've seen lattice boards which are inexpensive sanded down stained, waterproofed and glued over the old counter. I've seen polished pea gravel embedded in an acrylic vanity top. They built a framework around the vanity pored the polished pea gravel in and smoothed around then poured acrylic into the mold. You could do concrete or large tile.

I did faux granite on my dated laminate. I couldn't believe how well it turned out!
