Tutorial for Adding Chicken Wire to a Chair for Flowers

This shows a very detailed tutorial on how to add chicken wire to an old chair to hold flowers.
Start with any old chair with an insert of some kind in the seat. The above chair is just as I bought it for only a couple of dollars. If you want to paint your chair, nows the time to do so. I chose to leave ours as is because I knew it would be out in the elements and paint wasn't going to last on it too well. I ended up cutting all the cane out.
After buying a round coco coir liner, I had to come up with an idea on how to shape the chicken wire to fit this. Stupid as it sounds, I had a large metal colander I turned upside down and I placed the coco coir over it.
OK, I only have two arms and two hands; so I had to come up with something to help hold the chicken wire in place while I tried shaping it. We were at our cottage and this is what I found...an old Thesaurus! Actually, anything that's heavy to place on top or better yet, find another pair of hands to help hold it in place for you.
I place the chair upside down on my work table, and used a staple gun to secure the chicken wire to the underneath side.
Then I took a needle-nose plier and bent and twisted some of the lose ends of the wire so no one would hurt themselves when they pick up the chair.
When finished, add the coco coir liner and fill with dirt and flowers.
Everyone will rave about it!

Did you use a sealer on the wood to repel watering & rain? I have made half a dozen similar chairs, most of them I like to paint a bright color so they 'pop' from the garden. If moss is handy in the woods, growing on trees in can take the place of the coco liner. Fun to repurpose!!

The chair is weathered and old. It will be in the weather. You probably want the Rustic, old look?, so why not leave it as is?. You made it right. It looks beautiful with the flowers!!
