Use 120-grit sand paper and sand down the surface of the fiberboard. Use a tack cloth to remove the dust particulates created by sanding then simply paint or stain the surface of the particle board. You may use one or more coats as you see fit. Yes, you can use black paint. Enjoy
Just lightly sand to remove any gloss and roughen for paint. Prime wit a stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123. Then paint with the black. Use a small foam roller and foam brush. No brush marks!
