Snake in pond, what to do?

Nancy Gramm

I'm sure it's a garter snake, but why in my pond? My husband says not to worry; it won't eat the fish. He says the fish may even eat the snake, but snake sure doesn't look worried and definitely not chewed upon. Should it concern me, or should I just leave him alone? He creeps me out more in the water than he would in the yard. There, I think "good snake," but here, total skin-crawl.

Does look like a gardener snake. I remember being a kid and freaked out when I learned snakes could swim.... I thought I was safe in the water. I don't know how big your fish are but they will eat fish. He will crawl out eventually, but if he has learned there is a food source there he will be back. I would put some mothballs around your pond to keep him out. Here is another article that might be helpful. http://pestkill.org/other/snakes/ good luck

Give it a while to get used to him, he might creep you out less over time

That said, have you seen this web page about how to get rid of snakes in your pond? http://www.thepondoutlet.com/pondblog/?p=747

Doesn't look like any gartersnake I have seen! Like you, I don't care for snakes . . . my self-comforting thought is 'shoes, very nice shoes . . . '

I get snakes in my pond too. As long as they are not venomous I leave them alone. It is probably just in to regulate it's body temp and will move on.

  • He is fine, snakes like this are good for the garden. If you want him out, fish him out with a net and let him move on.

I meant to fish him out but couldn't find him. It's not a large pond though he could be in the water lily foliage so I put one end of a branch into the water. Hopefully, if he's still in there, he'll crawl out. Life in the country, what can I say? It's an education.

Can he get out? I would be afraid he would drown.

I think he's a cute snake. He's not a garter snake, but he's not poisonous either.

Even looking at the picture the snake freaks me out ! I would try to catch him (rather ask someone to do it) and bring him far far away....

I also have a snakes that look like that. Creep me and my tea cup chi out. First I think I saw mom. Now I have little ones. Mom was at least 2 ft. long. There in my flowers and even on my place where I take pup out to do his business. And that is just inlaid bricks. I need to have them gone.
