It will close the electrical circuit before it can catch fire if there is a short.

So if they get wet, you don't get electrocuted! It's a good thing!

Building codes require a GFCI outlet to be installed anywhere there is an outlet within 3" of a water source, like sinks, especially bathrooms. It breaks the circuit immediately if anything comes in contact with water to prevent electrical shock. Curling irons, blow dryers in the bathroom, etc. Hand mixers, coffee makers, blenders, in the kitchen, etc.

They are also good outdoors when using powertools, lawnmowers etc., and a must have near pools and ponds.

Actually the NEC codes require these within 6' feet of any water source. Also any outdoor, garage, pool or basement. They monitor all electric current leaving the "hot" wire and compare it with the current coming back thru the neutral wire. If there is any unaccounted current missing, the outlet shuts down.

Does the outlet have to have the black and red buttons to make this outlet under the NEC codes? Had a contractor make an island for my kitchen and there is an outlet on the side without these buttons
