by sanding the shellac off...so the paint will stick
Chalk paint!
Lightly sand to remove any gloss and roughen the surface for paint. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123. Then paint with your color. Seal with at least three coats of a water based polyurethane lightly sanding in between coats.
