What about a bench? Then they could sit to remove also.
By my backdoor, I have a small set of shelves. Everyone puts there shoes in, and they stay organized and out of the way. Love it!
A bench with baskets underneath to put the shoes in.
A small bench with a pull-out drawer or flip-down front would also be a cute idea
I found a small chest of drawers, painted it to match my porch/ house and store the shoes in the drawers. Works well and looks fine to "boot".
