Most taps do not have filters on them. Depending on where you live you may not need one. We are blessed with wonderful drinking water where I live. If you have water with a strong smell, chemicals, etc, you'll need to install a filter to your faucet.
I agree with Chas. Most homes do not have a filter on their tap water. If your water does not look clear or taste clean, either install a filter on the tap itself, or you can use the filter pitchers that are available in most stores. One other thought...if your refrigerator has a water dispenser, there is a filter on it. You could choose to only drink water that has been run through that source.
You can also buy replaceable in line filters, at hardware and big box stores, that would be placed under the sink in kitchen and baths. Whole house systems are also available but are not inexpensive.
I put a filter on my kitchen sink. most people don't notice the difference but I do. If you like the taste and smell of the water then you may not need to put in a filter.
I only drink and cook with distilled water. There are chemicals in all municipal water.
