How to get water spikes to work?

I bought some water spikes from Christmas Tree Shop in order to be able to slowly water my potted plants but it seems like when you poke it in the soil the soil clogs up the hole so the water doesn't come out. Does anyone have any ideas how to get it to work? I've tried putting a large straw over the bottom but the soil still clogs up.

I found I had the same problem with water spikes. Theoretically, the water should still move from the bottle through the soil as needed by the plant even if there is soil in the spike. If it's made out of plastic you could try drilling a few more holes along the sides to improve the drainage.
