The piece of garden is 30'x25' ... shaded by a 20' flowering cherry tree ... a 15' red leaf maple ... a 100' huge cedar tree and some rhodos. Do I use ground covers ?? I would like to see it natural forest looking and somehow hide the needles and droppings of the cedar tree....it leaves a mess! Overwhelmed !!!! icon

  • Yes, I think groundcover may be the way to go. I would try a sedum as they are tough and reseed themselves and will come back on their own in the spring and can take a beating. Do not be overwhelmed, it is nature and nature is not perfect and manicured. You have some awesome trees to be thankful for, and it is always better to work with nature than against it.

    • There are many varieteties of sedum, all beautiful. I would research which ones would do best in your area and either purchase locally or on line. They are basically no maintenance groundcover. I talked my girlfriend in NC to buy a flat of it off of QVC a few years back, they shipped and sent what works in your zone using your zip code here in the US and at the appropriate planting time. That was several years ago and she tucked it in here and there and another area now looks like a beautiful carpet. Any little bit she trims off, she just puts in another location and nature does the rest. I have some too, but her property is much bigger. Great if you have kids or dogs, they can stomp on it with no problem. Only 2 to 3 inches high at most. No raking needed and not invasivee, trim only if you want to, but not necessary.

Basically there is no care for sedum.creeping sedum will give you the color and fill you are looking to achieve. If they start to overcrowd they are very easy to pull out.

Hostas and Day Lillies are a beautiful option. Best of all, they are prolific and can be split up in the fall and used in other areas or shared with your friends.
