What can we do about a Deck Ditch-? lts a dangerous open space

We have a gap between exterior house wall and start of deck; The depth of the gap is 5 feet. The previous owners built the deck off of the back steps covering up all but the top step but did not build the deck up to the house wall therefore you have a dangerous open space . On one side it is probably 10 feet long and the other probably 3 feet long

Is it possible to post a picture of the gap? It sounds like maybe your can cover it with some wooden planks? Or make a slanted wooden structure coming out of the wall to meet the end of the gap.

You could add dirt and plant flowers and/or shrubs in that area.
For safety, have professional deck builders extend the deck up to your house, so that you walk out on a flat surface. Most county building codes require that a deck be attached to a heavy board that is bolted securely to your house to prevent the deck from collapsing. This looks like an accident waiting to happen.
