Can I grow clematis under a tree? Will it grow up the tree?

    As long as the roots are shaded and the vines wii get enough sun .

    Personally, I would not plant a clematis under a tree. They need more sun.

    Look for shady climbers.

    Allowing any vining plant to climb up a tree can and will eventually damage the tree. It is the nature of a vining plant to climb the most convenient structure, so it isn't recommended to plant vining plants near trees.

    Agree with above .... my neighbor planted clematis on my fence, and it grew across and was killing my tree.....i cut it out, and it grew up her tree and killed it.
