Moxie on Jan 16, 2014You could increase the size of the base you have by roughing up the outer edge you plan to expand (beat on it with a hammer drill or the like) and then you can get a special bonding material that is meant to aid in bonding between set concrete and new. If you don't know where to get some, call your local ready mix concrete company and they will be able to help you. Slope the new concrete toward the existing drain (just elongate the slope). Place a under tile membrane (looks a little like black roofing membrane), then tile it all - you will be set. The thing to check is your drain...is it adjustable? (some can screw down or up to adjust to floor height) if not, you may need to replace this. You can build a perimeter curb and tile it as well. Be sure you have enough slope without any "lows" along the way that will trap water before it drains. Be warned, this is a major elbow grease project - you could also consider removing the existing and placing a pre-fab terrazzo (check with a local ceramic tile company) base (I think they have fiberglass as well) a little more pricy but much easier on the back. Also check what is under this floor..you need support for the extra weight. I hope this helps! Good luck!Helpful Reply
