Patching a ceramic tile hearth

The front edge of our ceramic tile hearth has a broken section the shape of a right triangle about 1/2" by 2". Question 1: Can I use cement to patch the tile? Question 2: After I patch the tile, I want to paint the whole thing black. What kind of paint should I use? Bill from Williamson, GA

if you are going to paint it all black, it might be easier to cover the whole thing with concrete to look as 1 slab could use concrete dye in black to paint over, or pre-dye concrete before spreading (kinda like making a concrete counter top) , also could paint over although I'm not sure which paints would hold up best on concrete and to heat from fireplace. GL and be sure and post pics here of what you end up doing would love to see. There are flexible concrete stamps to get the look of any type stone or even wood. And so many colors concrete dyes that whatever is in your mind for the eventual look of this is very doable. Also stone/brick veneer is another option if you are wanting to go that way (type that look and feel real )

Cynthia makes some good points~if you use the fireplace heat will be a factor for paint unless you use a high heat paint. With that, I am not sure what kind of adhesion you will get with tile + paint + heat. It might be best to look for other material to do the hearth in that will stand up to use and abuse. good luck

Paint will not hold up period. If your going to fix it... doing it right the first time will save you money and time in the long run. Take the tile off and start over. New thin set and new tile or stone. Another issue is the black... Even though soot is black, everything shows up on black so unless you want to constantly have to clean it up Black and white are the worst.

I agree with Debbie Harris. Take the tile off and replace with granite or some other material that does not have a solid color. This has the advantage of hiding some imperfections. Good luck.

I'm guessing you are looking for the cheapest fix, to make it look nice for now. You can find porcelain and ceramic tile repair kits online. If you plan to paint everything after you repair it, then use the black spray paint that is fire resistant up to 1200 degrees. I doubt the outside of the fireplace would even get close to that.

Rustoleum makes a high heat spray paint. But how about buying some bull nose tiles and rounding off the edges.

As a professional I know that you can easily fix the missing broken area with a pre mixed cement mortar (they sell in small containers) use a simple putty knife to fill the area. when it dries you can use a 100 grit sandpaper to smooth out ant imperfections then a 220 grit to finish it up. Very easy to do. As for painting it , yes it can be painted and i think a satin black would look great. Simply use a high heat Rust-Oleum paint. if you do not want to get into spraying it and thus the hassle of over spray they sell it in cans and you can easily tape of the surrounding areas using Frog Tape (painters tape) and brush it on and then use a small 3 inch foam roller to finish it up. it will look great. No need to spend the money on anything new. If you need any further help just contact me direct and i would be glad to advise you for nothing. I have done similar many times. Tile is so cheap; why don't you just pop it all off and change to black tile seating. I agree that a black seating area would compliment the stove better. You can do it. Give it a try.
