Cabinets, whether you get new, reface or paint and countertops have the most impact. Always try to donate your old cabinets to Habitat for Humanity or some group. When we did ours they even came and took them out for us for a small donation. Have a detailed plan for the whole project and definitely clean well as you go.

Have a master plan of all the projects you want to accomplish in the kitchen and then create a timeline to help determine the length of time the function of the kitchen will be disrupted during renovation.

  • Also have a realistic budget. Have a back up contingency fund. Rule of thumb is 10% of your budget. Depending on the size of the project I add in as much as 25% due to unforeseen items that will need to be brought up to code, such as electrical, plumbing, or rotted out structural beams. People forget how much things cost, purchse the best you can afford. If something seems cheap and too good to be true, it probably is and you will be replacing and spending more money unnecessarily.
