Are Mason Jars OUT?

Anna B
by Anna B
I was reading one of my daughter's interior design journals. In the back, they always devote a few pages to DIY and Crafting. One of the staff wrote an article about Mason jars. She implored everyone who has them or decorates with them to THROW THEM OUT! She said their popularity was gone three years ago and advised crafters to find a new trend to follow. Am I living under a rock? This is the first I've heard of this.

In my opinion, never throw away something that is useful or that can be made into something else. Mason jars are great candle holders, storage jars for kitchen items, etc. As far as being in style....I have always believed that a person should decorate their home the way they like and to suit themselves. Just because someone else doesn't like something doesn't mean you shouldn't have it in your home.

I don't know about style just what I like & I like the rustic yet crafty uses of mason jars for everything from flower vase, drinking glass (with lids), pencil holder, lotion dispenser (with pump) all this and you can even use them to can food amazing and oh so handy. Now lets talk about all the people that have a connection to these jars because their last name is MASON! I don't think there going anywhere, enjoy your collection and stop worrying what other people think.

You're right Cyndi. I often find myself caring too much about what others think.

I would not pay attention to what others have to say.Mason jars are still very popular and even if they were not if you like them use them.I recently just used decorative metallic ones on the tables with candles for my daughters wedding and they looked amazing.

Ignore this stupid person, they are so handy and you can make so man lovely gifts from a mason jar, lovely snow globes for children at Christmas, luminous jars for in the garden , tea light lanterns, jams, chutneys and pickles, paint them to match a room and use as storage jars, paint brush holders, pen and crayon pots and so much more. We live in such a disposable world using them up them is a great benefit on recycling and your pocket

Interesting you should say this, Marie. I had just purchased some paint and was preparing to paint 3 Mason jars (or Bell or Atlas or whatever I have) to create a summer centerpiece for my kitchen table. Then I thought I must really be out of the decorating loop! Thanks!

Mason jars are classic and never really go out of style.

    • Anna B Anna B on May 28, 2017

You're right Patricia, they ARE classic. If they weren't why would so many people have stores of them in their basements or storage room. My mother-in-law passed away a short time ago. My poor father-in-law was beside himself trying to clear out her things. I thought we had everything taken care of, when I opened a storage closet in their basement. There were more Mason, Bell and Atlas jars of all sizes and colors than I could count. He told me to take them all. I took two huge boxes. There was a craft sale in his small town that weekend, I told him to take them there and ask someone if he could share a booth. He made so much money selling them, complete with zinc lids for only $1.50 each! I told him his price was too low.

Not out at all. Martha Stewart displays them in her sets for tv. We had an estate sale for my mother-in-law and they were scarfed up and brought a good price. Especially the colored ones.

I've never seen any of Martha Stewarts TV shows. We don't get her channel here, not even on cable. As a testament to your comment, you should read my reply to the above comment. The price my father-in-law asked for all of my mother-in-law's jars would make you cry. Thanks!

  • Most of those articles are to hype some new product or trend. I have been using mason or canning jars my entire life in some capacity. And that is a l o n g time. Use what you have, use what you like and take these articles with a grain of salt. Vintage, farmhouse, shabby chic has been around for some time and all these fads come and go. As I see it, some people love this style, others like more moderm, others steampunk, and so on. Do what YOU like - there is no right and no wrong. These magazines need to sell and push product . . . From the advertisers.

In apartment and have trouble with ants. I use Mason ( or similar), to store everything

in my kitchen etc. I use them in the bathrooms for small items and just everywhere.

    they are wonderful.

What was the author advertising or trying to sell ? Never throw away jars.

  • Rachel Palmer Rachel Palmer on May 31, 2017

As everyone has said, Masonjars are classic and useful, especially if you have a more rustic, vintage, or farmhouse vibe. I think what is out of style are the kitschy crafts done to mason jars as seen in years past. Keep the jars clean, no chalk paint or burlap or mirror paint, and use to your heart's content.

There are so many uses for mason jars. You can use them as drinking mugs as many southern restaurants do. Make cool outdoor lighting using tea lights or even battery powered lights. A few years ago I helped my nieces make DIY snow globes using mason jars. I could go on forever. Mason Jars will always be "in" style.

Why should you care what other people think?

  • Ana Ana on Jun 04, 2017

So are they out? Should I get rid of it? :(

  • Ginny Ginny on Jun 04, 2017

Who cares if they're out of style? Do you like them, use them, want them? Then keep the jars for yourself, family or friends, and don't try to make other people happy. Ignore upscale magazines that try to dictate what colors, accessories, furniture, etc. are in. Please yourself!

I used them way before they became a fad, and will continue to use them... do your own thing! Don't let some designer tell you what to like.
