I need to build a small door about 32 by 40 under the opening of my stairs. Any suggestions? Thanks, Linda

  • Couple different options: 1)buy solid wood door and cut down to the 40 and move the hinges where you need them 2)couple louvered bifold doors cut down if the solid part of the door is at or around 40" that you need and you could use them as swinging doors (cafe doors). You would not need any hinges because you could reuse the ones with the doors. 3) much more involved-1/2-3/4" plywood cut down (any home store will do this for you) and you could buy some small trim and trim the door to look nice and buy cheap door hinges and hang it like a door. You can stain or paint depending upon your trim or blend it in your wall color.

You might use a sheet of plywood. Most hardware stores will cut it to the exact size you need to fit the opening. You can purchase the type of hinges used for kitchen/bath cabinet doors and any type of knob or pull and latch that you like.

Try a restore and bring a tape measure. May find perfect size or some ting to cut that would be cool, ouside the box... Put hinges and handle on old window, or shutters, large cabinet doors. Or try Salvation Army and find a piece of armoir and offer low price. Use one of doors now and have extra quality wood for next project. I just bought h huge hutch top for $25 bc they had georgeous large beveled pain glass doors and 3 mirrors inside, not to mention all the clear glass and detailed trim to use later
