Are you going to prime before painting ? If you are, then you just have to rough them up, clean them well and prime before painting .

If you want to avoid major sanding, just clean them well, lightly sand and use chalk paint. It sticks to anything and requires little prep.

You only have to sand until the shiny is gone, not down to the bare wood. There is a product on the market that you paint on and takes the place of sandpapering but I must admit I've never used it. Inquire about it at your local hardware store.
