What was used as a wood finish in the Victorian period?

Purchased an 1898 Victorian and I would like to duplicate the finish on the wood. It has lots of hand carved window and door trim as well as a craftsman style staircase.

    Furniture and cabinetmakers finished wood with a hardening oil, varnish or wax blend produced from their own unique formulas. Oil-Based varnishes, shellac finishes, French polishing, Most common was shellac.used on house trim.

    Can't provide specific names , just know the stains were usually very dark rich brown.
